ZOOM TEETH WHITENING

Would you like that perfect Hollywood Smile?

Teeth Whitening has increasingly become a very popular treatment in Ireland. White teeth project a sharp, clean and attractive image. In the workplace it is also important to project a self confident, professional and smart image for business meetings and job interviews. Since teeth are the focus of the face; clean white teeth make a great first impression. With the advent of better dentistry, the introduction of fluoride and increased dental awareness, people are more focused now on their smile than ever before. As a result many people are looking for ways to improve the appearance of their smiles as well as portraying a younger, healthier image. One of the most immediate ways of attaining this healthier image is by having your teeth professionally bleached. This is also a great anti-ageing treatment because brighter whiter teeth will give a more youthful appearance as opposed to dark, yellow or stained teeth that just make us look old. Remember you only get one chance to make a first impression! If you would like to have this dentist delivered treatment please call now 01-667 8000 to book this treatment with one of our Irish Registered Dentists today.

Where should I go if I want to be guaranteed a safe treatment that
actually works?

ZOOM teeth whitening gelIt is really important that you attend a dentist if you are considering having this treatment. Over the past two years there has been an influx of non-dentist delivered whitening systems by commercial salons and non dentist whitening clinics, using illegal levels of hydrogen peroxide, which can cause long term damage to teeth and gums.

This latest trend in persons attending commercial salons/whitening clinics for slightly cheaper (albeit unregulated) teeth whitening treatments will soon stop with the introduction of pending EU Law Changes. Unfortunately some of these salons are even claiming that this treatment now belongs to the beauty industry, and that you no longer need to visit your dentist. Obviously these claims are both false and dangerously misleading. Fortunately the European Union is moving quickly to introduce new EU directives that will put a stop to non dentists whitening teeth.

What exactly is tooth whitening?

Tooth whitening can be a highly effective way of lightening the natural colour of your teeth without removing any tooth structure. It cannot make a complete colour change; but it will lighten the existing shade. There are two main systems available, one of the quickest and easiest method is laser whitening which takes just over an hour and should only be carried out by a dentist. The second system DermaDental Hollywood White ™ takes just half the time and again gives outstanding results and once again is a Dentist delivered treatment. Your resident DermaDental dentist will advise you which method is best suited for your teeth.

Why would I need my teeth whitened?

There are a number of reasons why you might get your teeth whitened. Everyone is different; and just as our hair and skin colour vary, so do our teeth. Very few people have brilliant-white teeth, and our teeth can also become more discolored as we get older. Your teeth can also be stained on the surface through food and drinks such as tea, coffee, red wine. Smoking can also stain teeth.

What is the most effective and easiest way to whiten my teeth?

Teeth Whitening systemZoom Laser Teeth Whitening is a painless procedure; taking just over one hour laser power whitening or in-surgery whitening is the most effective and easiest way to whiten your teeth. Many over- the- counter teeth whitening products are abrasive and wear away the enamel on your teeth. Whitening strips are also potentially damaging to your teeth. The single safest way to whiten your teeth is via a professionally delivered system such as Zoom Advanced Power Teeth Whitening or Hollywood White TM and this is why DermaDental uses only these two systems as gold standard at our Dental Spa. No other teeth whitening system delivers a whiter brighter smile, better than in office whitening, and remember you only get one chance to make a first impression.

Why are there misconceptions that this treatment damages teeth?

Many misconceptions arise from the sub standard and unregulated whitening systems available through non dentists. These misconceptions come from unregulated whitening gels, and whitening strips available over the internet, alongside the many other forms of sub standard whitening systems that have arrived on the market by suppliers who are neither dentally qualified nor dentally trained.

What does a Zoom treatment involve?

The Zoom system is a scientifically advanced tooth whitening procedure. It is safe, effective and fast and works every single time; whitening teeth from up to 6 or 9 shades. In just 45 minutes of clinical teeth whitening the patient can have a whiter brighter smile which is on average up to 8 shades whiter. The result is immediate and takes just 1 hour in total. The procedure couldn’t be simpler, and is completely pain free. Initially special protective gels & creams are used to cover your lips and gums, leaving only your teeth exposed. The Zoom Whitening gel (25% hydrogen peroxide) is applied before the proprietary Zoom Lamp is placed in front of the teeth. This procedure is repeated on average 3 times, taking just 15 minutes each time. The Zoom laser lamp and gel work in unison to gently penetrate the enamel & dentine, thus breaking up stains and discolouration.

What difference does the Laser Light make?

During this procedure a protective layer is put over your teeth to protect the gums, and a bleaching product is placed onto your teeth. Then this laser light is shone on the teeth to activate the chemical. The light speeds up the chemical reaction of the whitening product and the colour change can be achieved more quickly using this procedure. Laser whitening can make teeth up to six shades lighter.

How long does this laser system take?

One of our resident DermaDental dentists will need to assess your teeth to make sure that you are suitable for the treatment. Once it has been agreed, this procedure from start to finish usually takes just over one hour.

How much does tooth whitening cost?

Private charges will vary from practice to practice and region to region. Laser or power whitening will be more expensive than professional home bleaching kits. Zoom Laser Teeth Whitening is usually €600-€800 and DermaDental Hollywood White ™ is RRP €995 as this is favourite of Irish & UK Celebs. Please see our latest special offers.

Does this treatment strip away enamel/will it weaken my teeth?

Zoom laser light machineThe Zoom laser light activated whitening gel is composed of Hydrogen Peroxide. This hydrogen Peroxide (25%) is placed on the teeth. As the gel is broken down, oxygen enters the enamel and dentin; bleaching coloured substances that lie within these structures. The structure of the tooth remains unchanged. Zoom does not strip away enamel, nor will it weaken teeth. The importance of having a dentist carry out this treatment cannot be overstated. There is published research to back up both the efficacy and the safety of laser teeth whitening treatment, please see science/dental research FAQ. In fact as far back as 1890, papers were published on teeth whitening. E.P. Wright the 19th Century dental researcher stated ‘there is no higher glory for one who professes the healing art of dentistry than that of preserving natural tissues”. So even 120 ago years the discerning dental practitioner was acutely aware of the need to ensure tooth structure was preserved in it’s entirety during efforts to whiten teeth.

Is there any science/dental research to back up Zoom?

The benefits of the light activated Zoom Advanced Power system simply cannot be compared to any other teeth whitening system. The Zoom laser lamp helps to activate the hydrogen peroxide gel, and allows the gel to penetrate the surface of the tooth. Studies have shown that the use of the Zoom Advanced Power Lamp increases the effectiveness of the Zoom Whitening Gel by 26-44%, therefore whitening teeth by up to 8 shades. According to the University of Texas, Dental Branch at Houston 2008 “Clinical Evaluation of a Zoom Chair Side Whitening Lamp & Bleaching Efficacy” resulted in recording teeth to be 35% whiter after 1 week, than with gel alone. Also in 2007 Linda Loma University, California presented a paper “Effect of Light Treatment on in vitro Tooth Bleaching Efficacy”. The results yielded a 48% immediately whiter smile than with gel alone. Clinical test results presented at the IADR by Dr Yiming Li concluded that, “under conditions of the study, Zoom Light exposure significantly enhances the efficacy of Zoom Gel”. Also in 2007 The Dental Advisor published a paper titled “Zoom Advanced Power Chair Side Whitening System Effect of Zoom Advanced Power Lamp on Whitening” reported that “Whitening with use of the high-output, sodium free, short-arc lamp resulted in a greater shade change compared to whitening without the lamp immediately after treatment, after 7-10 days, and after 30 days. Results immediately after whitening and also 30 days after with the use of the high-output, sodium-free, short-arc bulb lamp showed that maxillary teeth on average were 1.9 shades lighter and mandibular teeth were 0.7 shades lighter as compared to whitening without the lamp”. An overall result of 44% whiter after 30 days, using Zoom laser lamp, than with gel alone.

Does plaque affect the colour of my teeth?

Calculus or tartar can also affect the colour of teeth so please visit our hygienist for a good clean before deciding to spend money on laser teeth whitening. Some people may have staining under the surface, which can be caused by certain antibiotics or tiny cracks in the teeth which take up stains. Such stains may benefit from internal bleaching. You teeth also become stained from smoking, cola, tea, coffee and curries. What is the active ingredient in teeth whitening gels? The active ingredient in the product is usually hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide. As the active ingredient is broken down, oxygen is released into the dentine in the teeth and the tooth colour is made lighter by the natural breakdown of this product.

How do I know if I am suitable for this treatment?

Before any teeth whitening treatment is carried out, it is necessary to have your teeth checked by a dentist to ensure you are suitable for treatment, and which system will suit your teeth best. Often a scale & polish is needed before treatment to make sure that there is no plaque present. At DermaDental we only ever have a dentist carry out this treatment so whichever resident dentist is going to complete your treatment for you will ensure your are a suitable candidate.

Is it ok to have my teeth whitened at a beauty salon?

Only a dentist can safely and effectively whiten your teeth. Currently some commercial salons/non-dentist unregulated whitening clinics are using whitening gels containing dangerously high levels of teeth bleaching product that are causing long term damage to teeth and gums . However the majority of commercial salons do not have access to products with sufficient percentages of whitening product, so most of their treatments give very disappointing results. Unfortunately the gel is not strong enough to whiten the teeth, although if misplaced on gums or other soft tissues there is an increased risk of tissue damage or burns.

What laser system is available at DermaDental?

At DermaDental we use Zoom as gold standard at our clinic. This method has a long term proven track record, and this system is licensed only to Irish Registered dentists. Do not be tempted to go for a cheaper more inferior laser teeth whitening treatment carried out by non dentists in a beauty salon type setting. We see the results of this regularly; the result is always disappointing for the patient and there is also an increased risk of sensitivity. The result with Zoom is predictable and works every time with patients enjoying the benefits of this system.

What should I take into consideration when deciding which teeth
whitening system to use?

Your smile is important. It is one of the first things you notice when you meet someone. A whiter, brighter smile is beautiful - it can help you feel better about yourself and after all you only get one chance to make a first impression. Your lifestyle and the aging process can stain and darken your teeth. Many things we do on a regular basis can contribute to stained teeth, such as drinking coffee, tea, cola and red wine or smoking. This laser treatment can get your smile looking its best. Non-professional procedures and clinically unproven teeth whitening tips can often lead to unsatisfactory results, you should look for a whitening procedure that is: fast & convenient, long lasting, low sensitivity, proven to be safe & effective and performed only by a dentist.

What are the side effects?

Some people may find that their teeth become sensitive to cold during or after the treatment. Very few others report discomfort in the gums or white patches on the gum line. These symptoms are usually temporary and should disappear within a twenty four hours of the treatment. In the past three years we have only documented 3 incidences of sensitive teeth out of thousands of patients who have come to our clinic for teeth whitening treatments.  If you did have any symptoms of sensitivity these can be easily managed with paracetemol or neurofen (whatever you would normally take for a headache) and sensitivity resolves within 12-24 hours, and is
very manageable

What about home kits that I can buy in the chemist or supermarket, do these work on teeth?

Often people are tempted to buy over the counter whitening strips or take home kits available from the local pharmacist/drug store.  Unfortunately these home kits bought in the chemist or the supermarket are cheaper and generally ineffective. This is particularly true especially in the UK & Ireland where the concentration of the active ingredient is very much lower than in the USA. Tooth whitening is a complicated procedure you should only have it done by a dentist.

Do you recommend over the counter kits?

Over the counter kits sold in the UK & Ireland are not recommended as they usually contain only a small concentration of hydrogen peroxide (the whitening product). The legal limit in the UK is 0.1% of hydrogen peroxide and effective bleaching products need to have about 3.6% (only dentists can use this concentration), so home kits may not be able to lighten your teeth noticeably. Also, some contain mild acids and others are abrasive. This could cause ulcers and damage to the gums if the product is not used properly. At DermaDental we can offer you a safe and effective solution to whiten your teeth.

What about whitening toothpastes?

There are several whitening toothpastes on the market. Although they do not affect the natural colour of your teeth, they may be effective at removing staining and therefore may improve the overall appearance of your teeth.  It is important to discuss with your dental team the best way to maintain your new whiter brighter smile.  Some whitening toothpastes may also help maintain that whiter smile after your teeth have been professionally whitened.

When might tooth whitening not work?

Teeth Whitening procedures only work on teeth, they do not work on teeth that are capped or crowned. Tooth whitening can only lighten the existing colour of your teeth. This procedure does not work on any type of ‘false’ teeth such as porcelain veneers, dentures, crowns or composite veneers. This is very important to bear in mind, if you have crowns or veneers and you whiten the surrounding teeth these crowns/veneers will need to be replaced after teeth whitening and made lighter to match your newly whiter brighter smile! If you want to replace veneers/crowns then the additional fee will be at an extra cost to you.  However crowns and veneers do not last a lifetime and when it is time to change them, then it is also a good time to have your teeth whitened because the new crowns/veneers can be matched to your new whiter brighter smile!
